Want to know your Ayub from your Balladi?
Want to learn about Middle Eastern rhythms?
Want to play the darbuka?
Connect with others?
You're in the right place.

MazaJ is running an on-going percussion workshop in a relaxed and social space in Clerkenwell. The class is given by Loaui Al Hanawi, a London based Syrian performer and composer. He is an internationally noted Ney player, and percussionist, who studied and taught at the Conservatoire in Damascus. He has 10 years experience of secondary and undergraduate level teaching.

All levels of experience, from beginner onwards are welcome. The class covers basic techniques of musicianship, technique for the darbuka, and the most widely used rhythms.

Advanced workshops are available for those that want more - detailed technique, performance and study exercises, theory, other drums such as riqq, and daff, and the chance to perform at one of the MazaJ events.

To get the best from the classes, we suggest that practice at home (if possible) helps, and a commitment to classes helps you to make progress. For that reason, you can get a discount if you sign up for groups of five classes. That said, if you just want to drop in when you feel the urge, that's fine. You know were to find us.

You can register at
